About your ex-bf mom, well... it may be a litle bit awkward for his gf, but it's between you and his mom.. and if everyone feels confortable about that there's no need to worry. You're not really doing anything wrong.
Just because you two are not dating anymore it doesn't mean you can't keep a relationship with people close to him :)
Oh.. about your question. I don't how does it work in USA... here law school takes 5 years. :) So.. 2 more years until I'm done. :D
