Great Big 366 Update . . . Yay!

Thanks to Helen's visit, which is allowing me to vacation in Atlanta, I've snapped a bunch of new themes. So far, we're at 18 and counting!

366 Pictures: #194 Opening

Photobucket

I love water lilies. I think they're so beautiful. I love how they bloom up out of the water and then open up to reveal these delicate interior petals.

Photobucket

Date: October 30, 2008.

366 Pictures: #163 Temperature

Photobucket

Fall is probably my favorite season in Atlanta. While my allergies are at their worst, the weather here is wonderful. We have gorgeous, clear days, beautiful fall colors, and near perfect temperatures. It's nearly always in the 60s and 70s.

Date: October 31, 2008.

366 Pictures: #193 Duplicate

Photobucket

I loved the way the sun gave such a smooth reflection of the sculptures and plants in this garden pond. I really like the way both of these pictures turned out. So, you get a two-for.

366 Pictures: #138 Stars

Photobucket

A group of Coke bottles decorated with the United States flag, plenty of stars on these.

Date: October 31, 2008.

366 Pictures: #333 Cactus

Photobucket

The conservatory at the Atlanta Botanical Garden has a desert room filled with different types of cacti. This one was nice and spindly.

I also really liked this one, too.

366 Pictures: #142 Shiny

Photobucket

One of the moving sculptures on display at the Atlanta Botanical Garden.

Date: October 30, 2008.

366 Pictures: #337 Fuzzy

Photobucket

I have no idea what this plant is, which is bad. It was taken inside the conservatory at the Atlanta Botanical Garden. I think the little hairs on the buds qualify as fuzzy, don't you?

Date: October 30, 2008.

366 Pictures: #185 Traffic

Photobucket

Crossing the downtown connector, a pretty typical start to the evening rush. Trust me, it gets much worse.

Date: October 31, 2008.

366 Pictures: #215 Baubles

Photobucket

Every year around Halloween, the Atlanta Botanical Garden displays scarecrows created by different companies, civic organizations and towns. This scarecrow was made out of bicycle parts and these little decorations.

Date: October 30, 2008.

366 Pictures: #15 Chalk

Photobucket

Taken from the store within the World of Coca-Cola. This Coke bottle is made to look like a chalkboard.

Date: October 31, 2008.

366 Pictures: #158 Fear

Photobucket

Not the greatest picture, but I was on the last reserves of my camera battery and gave up my flash in order to take more pictures. This little guy is known as the Dendrobates azureus, better known as the Blue Poison Frog. Since his skin releases poisonous toxins, this cute little blue frog is something to be feared.

Date: October 30, 2008.

366 Pictures: #133 Urban

Photobucket

Taken at the Atlanta Botanical Garden looking towards downtown Atlanta.

Date: October 30, 2008.

366 Pictures: #353 Waiting

Photobucket

This big guy was hanging out just outside the Civic Center Marta station. He was patiently waiting for the perfect dinner to come along.

366 Pictures: #35 Park

Photobucket

The Olympic fountain at Centennial Olympic Park.

Date: October 30, 2008.

366 Pictures: #44 Steam

Photobucket

This one may be tough to see, but there is steam rising up from the water. This was taken at the Atlanta Botanical Garden. It's a heated steam area which sits just below the Nepenthes Chandelier. I've posted a picture of the chandelier below. It's an amazing glass sculpture by Dale Chihuly!

366 Pictures: #150 Photo

Photobucket

I initially had something altogether different planned for this theme, but, I really love this photo and wanted to use it. I love the different colors of blue, purple and pink that are in the flower, and I love the composition of the photo.

Because I didn't have a theme that screamed pretty, delicate flower this "photo" theme was the best fit.

Date: October 18, 2008.

366 Pictures: #320 Feather

Photobucket

This is some sort of plant my Mom has in her yard. I thought is was very delicate and feathery looking.

Date: October 18, 2008.

366 Pictures: #247 Tradition

Photobucket

Photobucket
I grew up just outside of Knoxville, home to the University of Tennessee and the Tennessee Volunteers. My Dad and I used to go to Tennessee football games all the time when I was growing up. Dad had an extra ticket to the Mississippi State game a couple of weeks ago and I got to go along.

These two pictures are part of the Tennessee football tradition. The "Pride of the Southland Band" creates the Power T on the field and marches its length. Then, they reverse and create the T in order for the players to run through.

Date: October 18, 2008.

366 Pictures: #141 Forgotten

Photobucket
This is what happens when my nephew leaves his toys at Grampy's house. His sister discovers them, and into her mouth they go!

Date: October 18, 2008.

366 Pictures: #91 Lonely

Photobucket

This is Lucy, or as I like to call her Luce-Goose. She's been missing her partner in crime since we lost Charlie, so she's a lonely pup.

Doesn't she have the sweetest face?

Venting Frustration . . .

I have debated for several days on whether I even want to blog about this. I probably shouldn't as there's a good chance it could get back to the persons involved, but I find it very hard to stop ruminating and I need to vent.

I understand that politics is a touchy subject for many people. For me, in general, it takes a lot to upset me and get me riled up. This did. Within the last few days, I was told by someone the reason they were planning to vote for the McCain/Palin ticket was because they were racist. They just put that right out there. They don't want a black man telling them what to do.

I literally thought I was going to have to pick my jaw up off the floor.

As I've thought about this for the past few days, I've gone through a range of emotions. At first I was really pissed off, then annoyed, and through some others I've come to the point where I'm just saddened. It's incredibly scary to me that in 2008 there are still so many people who see a person simply based on their race. Their minds are completely closed -- practically sealed.

I have absolutely no problem with the candidates people choose to vote for. We have a right to choose which candidates best match our morals and beliefs. However, when those choices are based on something as arbitrary as race, or gender, even age, it bothers me. I wouldn't rule out McCain based on his age. I didn't rule out Palin based on her gender. I haven't ruled out Obama because he is black.

I chose my candidate based on what he stands for, how his views compare with my views.

Wouldn't it be nice if there was a way for us to not see a political candidate at all prior to election day? It used to be that way for many people. All you had to rely on were the candidates words, their speeches. How great would it be if they were chosen solely based on their stance on the issues we face and on the strength of their character instead of their race, or even their party?

(On a side note, it would also be nice if people would think for themselves instead of immediately believing what they see and hear. Take time to research your candidates, especially the local ones!)

366 Pictures: #271 Masculine

Photobucket

So, this picture comes with a short story. When I was little I was pretty set for a while on what I wanted to be when I grew up: Quarterback for the Tennessee Vols. There were two things I failed to realize at such a young age. First, that the position was temporary. Second, that it's more of a masculine job than a feminine one. :)
