Fairs or Amusement Parks (90 of 365)

365_Fairs_Or_Amusement_Parks-2009]

There are several fairs held in the Atlanta Metro Area each year. The Atlanta Fair is held during March and through the first week of April. I'd really like to walk around and take some photos of the entire fair. This one was taken while driving past the fair.

Sunday Six: Week 13

This week is another Recap Six, all taken yesterday.

SS13_Pink_Panther[2009]
A friend and I met up for lunch and margaritas and then wandered into a neat vintage furniture store. They had no problem with the two of us wandering around taking pictures. They had a lot of fun stuff, including this old Pink Panther!

SS13_Vintage_Leaves[2009]
They also had these interesting leaves . . .

SS13_Vintage_Man_in_Shades[2009]
and nearly naked mannequins! He's a bit noisy, since I had to increase my ISO to get fairly light shot. So, this one has been put through the CS3 noise reduction filter. :)

SS13_For_Dr_Fo[2009]
I saw this yesterday and immediately thought of Allison. So, a little bit of CU in Atlanta. ;)

SS13_Loft_Space[2009]
Finally, a couple of pictures of a loft that I viewed yesterday. It's a super good deal, but it doesn't have quite as much room as I'd like.

SS13_Loft_Space2[2009]
It does, however, have 27' ceilings, a very neat red wall, and is one of only three lofts available in my neighborhood.

And, that's my Six for this week! I have some other photos from the vintage furniture expedition that will be showing up in some 365 themes, too.

Stripes (89 of 365)

365_Stripes[2009]

I'm assuming the stripes on this wall have been created from the minerals of the rocks above it. Anyway, I like the different colors that have resulted.

March To A Different Drummer (88 of 365)

365_March_to_a_Different_Drummer[2009]

Gap (87 of 365)

365_Gap[2009]

I have no clue what kind of trees these are. I like the smooth bark they have. Just in case you're wondering about the theme, this picture was taken looking through a gap in the branches. ;)

Looking Down (83 of 365)

365_Looking_Down[2009]

This was taken at Lullwater Park. As I was walking along the paved trail, dodging puddles as I went, I spotted the reflection of the branches in this little puddle. I tried to get the same effect in a few other puddles, but couldn't get it right. Most of the time, you could see the reflection and the pavement underneath. That wasn't what I was going for. This one turned out just right, though.

Sunday Six: Week 12

Another Recap Six for this week. Just like many of my recaps, all but one of the pictures was taken today.

S12_More_Dandelion[2009]
A dandelion. There were about 5 of these growing in my friend's yard. However, when I got in position to take some photos, one of his dogs would come and knock the flower.

SS12_King_Perimeter[2009]
A quick snap of the "King" building as I drove downtown today. This tower has a "Queen" building standing beside it. At some point, I'll snap a picture of both of them together.

SS12_Dandelion[2009]
Another dandelion, but this one is nice and yellow.

SS12_Atlanta_Fair[2009]
The Ferris Wheel at the Atlanta Fair. I really wish the tree hadn't got in my way.

SS12_Dandelion_2[2009]
Okay, this is the last dandelion picture. :)

SS12_Spamalot_Stage[2009]
Finally, a photo of the stage at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre. Wednesday night I saw "Monty Python's Spamalot." It was great!

Ga_Aq_Shimmer[2009]

This photo was taken from underneath the Tropical Diver exhibit at the Georgia Aquarium. I just happened to have the right mix of sunlight and shimmer. It's a bit blurry, but I still think it's pretty.

Larger Than Life (79 of 365)

GA_Aq_Whale_Shark_Two[2009]

I love this picture. It's not the greatest composition, or focus, but it's neat. How many times am I going to be that close to a freaking whale shark! If I'd been able to fit my hand through the bottom of the scaffolding I could've reach down and touched him. That's how close I was! There was no zoom involved in this picture.

On another note, this gives you a better idea of just how large these beautiful animals are.

Go Fish! (78 of 365)

One_Big_Grouper[2009]
Check out this guy! Can you imagine trying to reel him in? This is a giant grouper. They are heavily over-fished and sadly, many of these guys don't get to live to be so large. They can grow to weigh 800 lbs!

The Monterey Bay Aquarium is a great resource for sustainable seafood choices. You can download a Seafood Watch pocket guide here. If you're a seafood lover, it's a handy guide to the best choices for sustainable wildlife.

I've Been Tagged . . .

Okay, Barbs tagged me with this photo challenge. Here are the rules:

•Go to your photo folder on your computer
•Go to the 6th folder of photos
•Go to the sixth picture
•Put the picture on your blog and a description of it
•Invite six friends to join the challenge
•Link them in your blog

It just so happened that the 6th photo in my 6th folder was one I had already posted for 365 in 2009. So, I used the photos on my external hard drive instead.

Accra_Beach_Barbados
This was taken in August of 2006, when my Mom and I vacationed in Barbados. Go, go, go if you ever have the chance! It's a beautiful island and a lot of fun to drive around and explore.

This particular spot is just past the gorgeous Accra Beach in the town of Hastings. The palm tree has perfect placement for a nice picture. This was also taken with my old Kodak P&S. :)

And, I'm tagging, Helen, Allison, Christin, Donna, Bo, and Kristin

Stop the Action (77 of 365)

365_Stop_The_Action[2009]

Eyes (76 of 365)

Ga_Aq_Gator_Close-up[2009][2009]

A quick glance into the eye(s) of a predator, the American Alligator. This little guy doesn't look too scary, does he? I suppose once he grows though . . . .

Sunday Six: Week 11

This week is a Recap Six with pictures taken yesterday and today.

SS11_Out_Of_Work_Klingon
Up first we have an out of work Klingon marching in the St. Patrick's Day Parade.

SS11_Food_Savvy_Klingon
And, while he's out of work . . . he's evidently harmless.

SS11_I_Love_This_Dog[2009]
I want. That is all.

Okay, that's not all. How cute is that pup?! *sigh* If I only had a yard!

SS11_Tuba_In_The_Rain[2009]
Another from the St. Patrick's Day Parade, this time it's a picture of a tuba.

SS11_Eerie_Branches[2009]
This afternoon I headed over to the Emory University area to explore Lullwater Park. I'd heard it was a pretty place, and it is. This photo turned out to be underexposed, but I like it. Lullwater, although within Atlanta, is a really secluded park. I think the picture gives off an eerie vibe.

SS11_Lullwater_Buds[2009]
This one I love! I played a little bit with my 60mm lens today, mostly with these little pink buds. Some turned out awful, but this one turned out so nice. I was very pleased to have gotten a nice focus area without a tripod. I was trying so hard to get that large drop of water!

I'll have a few more pictures from the parade and Lullwater posted soon. They'll be in future 365 posts.

From The Sea (75 of 365)

Ga_Aq_Nandi[2009]

This is Nandi. She is a beautiful manta ray that was rescued from shark nets off the coast of Durban, South Africa. Manta rays are the largest rays in the ocean, and Nandi is nine feet across! She swims through the Voyager tank so gracefully.

Sunday Six: Week 10

Okay, this is a Recap Six from yesterday. Although, I ended up at the Georgia Aquarium rather than the King Tut exhibit. First, I'd really been looking forward to seeing the behind the scenes area all week. Second, I learned you cannot take any photos whatsoever inside the Tut exhibit. No cameras allowed. Period. While this makes sense, it's not a great spot to visit for a photo challenge.

So, today we have six photos from my visit to the aquarium, although only one is actually from my behind the scenes tour. There are a few others that will pop up for the 365 in 2009 challenge.

Ga_Aq_Cuttle_Fish[2009]
This is a cuttlefish. This type of cuttlefish (the common cuttlefish) only live one to two years. Cuttlefish are photochromic, having the ability to change their color to camouflage them from predators. Another interesting fact, sepia ink was originally obtained from cuttlefish rather than the artificial dyes currently used. They are hard to photograph, too!

GA_Aq_Lobby_Two[2009]
This is part of the lobby area of the Georgia Aquarium. I just liked the lines and colors.

GA_Aq_Reflection_Wall[2009]
This wall includes the names of many donors to the Georgia Aquarium. It's cased in acrylic, so it provides pretty neat reflections of other parts of the aquarium.

GA_Aq_Whale_Shark[2009]
The Georgia Aquarium currently houses four adolescent whale sharks. They have two females, Alice and Trixie, and two males, Taroko and Yushan. The females are a bit older, and larger, than the males, however they don't actually know how old these fish are. Whale sharks can grow to be around 25 to 35 feet long. If I remember correctly, Trixie is the longest one here, at 22 feet. To be so large, they actually have a throat the size of a quarter, which means they're filter feeders.

GA_Aq_Needlenose[2009]
This is a Largetooth Sawfish. I have visited this aquarium three times and this is the first time I've been able to get a photo of this guy that wasn't blurry!

GA_Aq_Ocean_Voyager[2009]
The whale sharks, largetooth sawfish, and many, many others all live here . . . in the Ocean Voyager tank. It's referred to as the one ocean tank because it houses species that you'd mostly likely not find together, and is meant to represent the fact that our oceans are all one big ocean. The tank itself is enormous and it holds 6.3 million gallons of water. The habitat dimensions are 284’ long x 126’ wide x 30’ deep at its largest points. It is the largest single aquarium habitat in the world. I took this picture standing on a piece of scaffolding that runs across the tank and it captures all but about 1/3 of the tank.

One of the neat things about the aquarium, at least I think, is that all of the species housed here were either rescues or born in a zoo or aquarium. Many animals have been rehabilitated and returned to the sea. Additionally, the aquarium is involved in many different areas of marine research, especially with regard to whale sharks.

Silhouette (67 of 365)

365_Goose_Silhouette[2009]

This shot was purely chance. I happened to get my camera up quickly enough to get this goose flying out of the water. It's a lucky shot!
